• What Is the difference between gap filling and strip filling?

  Gap filling is part of our wood floor restoration services. It is common for gaps to appear between the floorboards or between the parquet blocks over time. The smaller gaps are relatively easy to ractify by the gap filling service, where a mixture of clear resin and saw dust, which is collected from the sanding process is used to fill in the gaps. Nevertheless, it should be noted that bigger gaps are trickier to fill. This is where strip filling comes to help.

  Strip filling uses small pine slivers between the floorboards and goes together with resin & saw dust filler. While this is often an effective method, it is not ideal solution for larger areas as it can spoil the look of the timber floors.

  Important note for both gap filling methods is that they are dependant on the solidness of the floorboards. Stability of both depends on absence of movement in the floorboards or in the joists that hold the floorboards. Therefore, gap filling for floorboards is excluded from the service guarantee of flooring companies.

• Whitewashed finish on wooden floors and how to achieve it?

  Hi and thank you for your question regaring whitewashed effect on wooden flooring.

  Achieving whitewashed / nordic finish on engineered oak flooring during floor restoration service with the use of either stains, lacquers or by using precoloured oil-based products. You need to be aware that there will be a slight difference in the appearance of the whitewashed effect depending on whether it has been achieved by lacquer or oil.

  If you decide to seal your floors with lacquer, whitewashed effect can be done in two ways. You can either use white pigmented primer like Bona White, or you can first apply white stain on the sanded floors and then coat it with multiple coats of clear lacquer. For our wood floor restoration service where staining is involved, we rely on some of the most popular products such as Bona Create Ice, followed by the application of three coats of waterbased Bona Mega lacquer in either matt, satin or gloss finish.

  If you prefer to achieve the whitewashed effect using oil-based products, then you need to be aware that this will achieve less uniform appearance.

• What can go wrong with DIY floor sanding?

  Hi,

  Restoring your floor can be challenging without prior sanding experience and knowledge. Floor sanding requires specific skills that are typically gained through experience. Therefore, it's advisable to leave parquet floor sanding to professionals like FloorWorks, who have expertise in handling various flooring types and can prevent costly mistakes.

  If you decide to proceed on your own, research parquet floor sanding thoroughly. Key points to consider include the correct technique for applying the wood floor finish. After sanding the floors to a smooth finish, apply the first coat of varnish carefully, ensuring it dries fully before applying subsequent coats. Imperfections like blobs can occur if the surface isn't perfectly smooth and clean or if the old sealant isn't completely removed, necessitating an expensive re-sanding and re-varnishing.

  Additionally, note that if your parquet flooring has been sanded before, there might be limited chances for re-sanding, possibly requiring a complete floor replacement.

• Do you do floor repairs to herringbone parquet flooring?

  Yes, we can supply matching blocks for most solid and engineered herringbone flooring. Usually after herringbone floor repairs, the floors may need to be sanded, gap filled and re-sealed for achieving uniform appearance to the floor.

• How long it takes before for the floors to be used again after sanding service?

  During the restoration service, the floors can handle light traffic without disrupting the process.

  During the sealing process, the floors can be used between coats. After the final coat is applied, lacquered floors can accommodate foot traffic in 2 hours, while hardwax-oil floors require 5-10 hours, depending on air humidity and the season. Furniture should be moved back into place the following day.

• How many coats of lacquer are included in your service?

  For domestic floor sanding services, we apply 1 coat of primer followed by 2 coats of lacquer. The final sheen options are extra-matt, matt, satin, and gloss.

  For floor sanding in public spaces (offices, schools, church halls), we use 1 coat of primer and 3 coats of commercial-grade lacquer, with sheen options including extra-matt, matt, and satin.
